WHAT, We Interviewed Taylor Carson

If you like Dave Matthews and John Mayer-you will LOVE Taylor Carson. He is on the fast track to blowing up all over the place and his music is sick-check his MySpace below to check out his songs and buy his stuff!

J: Has music always been around you growing up?

TC: Music hit me hard from day one. I can remember driving around with my father listening to the Charlie Daniels Band and John Denver like it was yesterday. He would make the car dance to the music, probably not the safest way to travel…

J: When did you first realize that you wanted to sing or could sing?

TC: I can remember being obsessed with Michael Jackson and tried to mimic his singing style when I was very young. I truly believed that I sounded exactly like him, can't really hit those high notes as well anymore.

J: Your sound is awesome and people have compared you to Dave Matthews and John Mayer-are they two of your influences?

TC: Dave Matthews turned my head in fourth grade or so. Hearing "Satellite" for the first time was like realizing you could dip cookies in milk. There was a lot of DMB, Blues Traveler, Counting Crows and Rusted Root coming from my sister's room and a lot of Allman Brothers and Grateful Dead coming from my brother's room. I chose to hang out with my sister more at first. My introduction to John Mayer was via "Why Georgia". I thought it was Dave Matthews and was psyched that he had some new stuff that rocked. I really dig how they can match conversational and compelling vocals with intricate yet accessible guitar parts. That has always been the type of guitar player I wanted to be.

J: 'Tangled in Truth' is fantastic and one CD I can listen to all the way through-one of my favorite songs on there is 'Lucky Tonight'. Do you write all of your own music?

TC: Thanks for the kind words about " T.I.T." I do write all of my own music and lyrics as well. I generally start by noodling around on the guitar until I find something that appeals to me. Once I find what I believe is a complete song I bring it to the band and the parts fall into place.

J: How do you feel about "crossing over" to speak into mainstream? (i.e., music videos, the whole MTV thing)-is that something you want or do you want to stay more towards the "indie scene"?

TC: I will go wherever the music takes me. At this point, I just want to play for as many people as possible and am more concerned with writing good songs.

J: How has touring and promoting been for your album and music? Do you like being on the road?

TC: We truly start touring this month. I have traveled a little bit here and there, but have never been gone for too long. I am psyched about it and I will let you know how it goes for me. Promoting can be tough, but it generally pays off. It's hard to be like, "you need to listen to this song, it's me and it rocks!"

J: If we were to look in your iPod right now, what artists would we find in there?

TC: I am currently really into the new Wyclef cd, "the carnival 2". That guy is a genius.
Also, Ellis Paul's "Essentials". He paints amazing pictures with words.

J: Who has been your biggest inspiration for your career goals?

TC: There are countless artists out there who have laid a path for guys like me. When it's all said and done, I just want to be happy and playing music does that for me.

J: What sort of things do you do to keep you occupied while on the road with your band mates? Or is just trying to catch up on as much sleep as you can?

TC: We've focused most of our energy as a band on regional touring and so we've rarely had to deal with living together in a van for long periods of time. We're also fortunate to have great friends and family every we've gone so far, so in addition to getting rest and staying healthy we try to spend as much time with family and friends as we can.

J: If you could perform your songs anywhere in the world-where would you be and why?

TC: Where ever they will have me. I write music because it's how I process the world around me – I play music in order to foster community. Whether that community calls me to Australia or Jersey I'll be there with my guitar.
