WHAT, Damn Yankee

Former Yankee Jim Leyritz is going to have to step up to a wrongful death lawsuit in addition to the DUI manslaughter charges he's facing after he allegedly caused the death of a Florida woman in a December car crash according to TMZ.

The suit, filed in Broward County, seeks at least $15,000 in damages for the family of Fredia Ann Veitch, whom Leyritz plowed into when he ran a red light in his SUV back in December. Cops say that Leyritz's blood alcohol was above the limit at the time of the accident.

Leyritz's lawyer has said that the ex-Yankee will be "both criminally and civilly exonerated." His criminal trial begins May 15.

We say, we hope he gets what he deserves and not just a slap on the wrist!

Thats his mugshot above-creepy.

I know you thought I'd have a comment on this, but I really don't.

It's a little creepy to me that he was allowed to just wander around in the Yankee clubhouse at Spring Training. I get that he's friends with Joe Girardi and Andy Pettitte and those guys, but creepy. I mean, it was manslaughter, not murder, so it's not like they need to be afraid of him or anything.

It's sad. He needs help. All reports say that the woman he hit was even more above the legal limit than he was. Not saying that makes it ok--not at all. Just saying when you have 2 drunk people on the road, something like this is bound to happen.

Leyritz has a kid (maybe more than one? I can't remember), but I can't imagine what it must be like to have to face his kid after doing something like this. I guess it's one of the best kinds of "don't drink and drive" lessons.

Very sad.
